Dumisane Phakathi

Dumisane Phakathi has been making movies since the age of sixteen. In 2003 he won the Standard Bank Young Artist and Durban International Film Festival awards for his fiction work. His documentaries include numerous movies for Arte, the BBC, the SABC and TV2 (Denmark).

His first documentary, Rough ride (nothing to do with condoms), is about the history and evolution of minibus taxis. His most famous documentary is Don’t fuck with me, I have 51 brothers and sisters and tells the story of his father, who was a very busy guy. (Phakathi as yet hasn’t followed in his footsteps). Fiction movies include Christmas with Granny for MNET and An Old Wives Tale with Ellis Cawood and James Borthwick. More recently Phakathi directed JoziH for the SABC and has also made several commercials for clients such as Vodacom, the Department of Labour, and Spoornet’s Shosholoza Meyl.

Phakathi recently started exploring the new visual medium of photography, and Nocturnal Fragments – in collaboration with Kagiso Pat Mautloa – is his first photographic exhibition.
